The margin for first on the grid was too small to see with the naked eye, and it barely mattered. Antonelli was right behind Hamilton from the start, sitting under a second back and refusing to go away. By lap 7 he was close enough to attack. One lap later, he got past. Hamilton had used up his car's speed boost defending, so he couldn't fight back once Antonelli found a way through.

Hamilton stayed close for a lap or two but never got back within a second, and then Antonelli began pulling away for good at half a second a lap until the gap was close to two seconds and still growing. None of that was bad driving from Hamilton; the Mercedes was simply the faster car at Silverstone that day.

Russell started P5 and soon caught up to Verstappen, then got stuck behind him, unable to find a way past for lap after lap. Once he finally cleared him, he spent the rest of the sprint closing in on Norris, but ran out of laps before he could get close enough to try a pass. He finished P4, ahead of Leclerc and Verstappen.

Elsewhere In The Grid

Perez spun Alonso around in all that opening chaos and picked up a 10 second penalty for causing it, which changed nothing given he was already last.

Lawson blocked Hadjar late in the race to defend the final points paying position, and Hadjar radioed his team to complain that Lawson had swerved across him, which is not allowed. The stewards reviewed it and gave no penalty, so Lawson held on for P8 with Hadjar right behind in P9.

Bortoleto had a race within the race against his own side of the garage, getting past Bearman in the midfield and then spending the closing laps hunting down his teammate Hulkenberg.

Leclerc had his own fight to win, and although Verstappen got right behind him and had a real look, Leclerc pulled clear for good soon afterwards. That piece of defending is the difference between his P5 and Verstappen's P6.

Antonelli won it off the driver who had beaten him to first on the grid by the smallest margin possible and then had no answer once he was passed, and his championship lead grew again.

The Grand Prix is on Sunday over the full race distance on the same track, and Hamilton will be wanting a rather different result.
