McLaren and Audi put on rain tyres at the start. There was no rain. They realised the mistake and pitted to fix it, but the damage was already done. Even fighting to recover, it wasn't enough. Norris's car broke down before he could get back into the points. Piastri picked up a 10 second penalty after hitting Albon and finished outside the points. McLaren scored nothing.

At the front it was a different race entirely. Russell led early. Antonelli pushed back and took the lead. Then Russell came back. Back and forth, lap after lap, the two Mercedes drivers trading positions at the top of the order. Then Russell's car stopped. Just like that, one of the best battles of the season was over. Antonelli had no one left to fight.

Russell's retirement and a safety car on lap 31 sealed it. Verstappen and Hamilton were already fighting for the podium. Now there was nothing in their way. Verstappen held P2 for most of the race. Hamilton hunted him down, made the move, and then held him off all the way to the line. Nobody predicted this podium at the start of the race.
